Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott will be suspended for six games, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The report comes after the NFL’s year-long investigation into domestic violence allegations against Elliott.

According to Schefter, Elliott is expected to appeal the suspension and has three business days to do so.

Elliott was accused of five acts of domestic violence over a six-day period in July 2016. Prosecutors declined to press charges.

The NFL released a statement on Friday saying that they conducted an “extensive” investigation that included interviews with both Elliott and Tiffany Thompson, the accuser. The NFL also said it reviewed thousands of text messages and consulted with medical experts.

According to the NFL statement, the league wrote a letter to Elliott advising him of the suspension that said the advisors to the investigation “were of the view that there is substantial and persuasive evidence supporting a finding that [Elliott] engaged in physical violence against Ms. Thompson on multiple occasions during the week of July 16, 2016.”

Elliott has had other off-field incidents, too. Video appeared to show him pulling down the top of a woman at a St. Patrick’s Day Parade in March. He also reportedly hit a man in a bar in July and sent him to the hospital, though he was never arrested or charged with any crimes.

Whenever the suspension is announced it, doesn’t mean the end of the process. Elliott’s appeal could take time and could lead to legal challenges, as seen when Tom Brady appealed his suspension for Deflategate.

According to Schefter, the NFL, after investigating Elliott, believes he violated the league conduct policy. The NFL also considered the video of Elliott pulling down a woman’s top, though Schefter reports it did not factor into the punishment decision.

Elliott is third Cowboys player to start the season suspended, according to Schefter.
